NLP presuppositions are assumptions we make that influence how we experience people, places, situations, events – the whole world around us. Sometimes the presuppositions we make connect us to the world. Sometimes they break this connection.

What if there were a set of presuppositions that built bridges, rather than tore them down – that showed us we could make music together rather than always playing solo – that opened a way for us to connect to one another and to be in the world in an open, curious and loving way?

The presuppositions (presups, for short) illustrated in my cards can help us do that. They are useful as a starting basis for effective communication and personal growth. They are a little like rules to live by to learn to appreciate and communicate with others.

As you begin to use these presuppositions and experience them in your life, you may begin to see some changes in how you respond to people and how they respond to you.

While there may be exceptions to all these presuppositions, they are a very useful starting basis for effective communication.

The Presuppositions included in your purchase are:
  1. Choice is better than no choice.
  2. The map or the worldview is not the territory.
  3. The meaning of your communication is the response that you get.
  4. People always make the best choices available to them at the time.
  5. The element with the most flexibility will be the controlling element.
  6. People already have all the resources they need.
  7. Any changes can only be evaluated in terms of the “ecology” of the whole system.
  8. The mind and the body are not separate. They are, however, distinct.
  9. Behind every behavior is a positive intent.
  10. People are whole and complete and work perfectly. No one is wrong or broken and they don’t need to be fixed.
  11. Every behavior is useful in some context.
  12. All communication is redundant.
  13. Anything can be accomplished if you break it down into small enough chunks.
  14. We are all responsible for creating our experiences.
  15. Just about anyone can learn to do anything.
  16. People respond to their worldview, not to reality.
  17. Respecting every person’s model of the world, including my own, is immensely useful.
  18. Symptoms – pains, anxiety, depression, tumors, colds, etc. are communications about needed action
  19. Knowledge, thought, memory, and imagination are a result of a combination of representational systems.
  20. "Resistance" is only a lack of rapport with another person’s map.
  21. There is no such thing as failure – only feedback.
  22. Anything worth doing well is worth doing poorly at first.
  23. My own and other’s self-worth is constant; the value and appropriateness of a behavior may be questioned.
  24. If you change your map, you’ll change your emotional state.
  25. Memory and imagination use the same neuro-pathways and potentionally have the same impact.
  26. People map’s are made of pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes and smells.
  27. No map is more "real" than any other.
  28. Experience has structure.
  29. The quality of our lives is determined by the quality of our communication.
  30. It is useful to separate self from behavior.
  31. People are like map-makers. They make maps of their experiences.
  32. Anything occurring in one part of the system impacts the rest
